Why Butterflies Matter

A Butterfly's amazing journey! 

A butterfly doesn't start out with wings! Its life begins as a tiny egg, usually laid on a special plant. 
When the egg hatches, out comes a hungry caterpillar. After lots of eating and growing, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis. Inside, an incredible transformation takes place. Then- out comes a butterfly! 
This amazing change is called: Metamorphosis.

Tiny eggs are laid on leaves!
 

The caterpillar eats and grows!
 

It hangs in a safe place and changes inside.

Butterfly Facts for kids:
  Did you know?

1) Butterfly's taste with their feet?! When they land on a leaf or flower, their feet help them "taste" to see if it's good to eat. 

2) Their wings are covered in tiny scales. These tiny scales create the beautiful colors and patterns we see. 

3) Many butterflies can see colors, including ultraviolet (UV) light. This helps then find nectar in flowers that we can't see.

4) Monarch butterflies migrate very far. Some travel over 2,000 miles to find warmer places to live during winter months. 

5) A butterfly drinks through a straw-like tongue. It's called a proboscis. It curls up when the butterfly isn't using it. 

6) Butterflies need sunshine to warm up and Some butterflies drink from mud! this is called puddling. They can get important salts and minerals from damp soil.

Jesus asked his followers to stop and notice something as simple as a wildflower. The wildflowers don't worry about how they will grow, yet God cares for them and makes them beautiful. Jesus used something small in nature to teach us something BIG: God knows what we need, he cares for us and we can trust him.

Butterflies have a story of growth, too. They begin as tiny eggs, become caterpillars and spend time hidden inside a chrysalis before finally spreading their wings. Their transformation reminds us that growth takes time and sometimes amazing things are happening even when we can't see them yet. So consider the wildflowers. Watch the butterflies and remember that you are growing too. You don't have to be big to make a difference. Like the little things in nature matter, the little things you do can matter too! Like a butterfly fluttering from flower to flower, a small act of kindness can leave behind something good behind.
